What is Horizen?

Horizen coin or ZEN is the native token that powers the Horizen platform. The Horizen coin was originally called ZenCash.

The total supply of ZEN coins is 21,000,000, making it deflationary. Therefore, the price of ZEN may rise as the coins become more scarce.

It is obtained using Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism and Equihash algorithm. The latter can hide the sender, recipient and transaction amount. Block rewards were distributed as follows:

• 60% – Miners;
• 20% – DAO;
• 10% — Operators of secure nodes;
• 10% — Supernode operators.

What are the main features of Horizen?

ZEN is the official currency of the Horizen ecosystem. The latter is an interoperable blockchain ecosystem with a massive multi-layer node infrastructure. This infrastructure powers over 10,000,000 transactions across over 10,000 supported sidechains. Simply put, this is The large multi-tier node system is the reason why Horizen is able to maintain high throughput for all transactions on the network..

Additionally, it provides unique privacy features that are completely optional.

One of its main features is scalable sidechain solution where developers can design and create their own projects.

As mentioned in the “What is Horizen” section, the project uses a PoW consensus mechanism on its main chain. As for Horizen sidechains, they are all tied to the main chain and operate using a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.

Its confidentiality is ensured through zk-SNARK which hide the logic and structure of the side chain from the main chain when the chains interact. In other words, the main chain is separated from the side chain.

Moreover, zk-SNARKs help developers use the Horizen network without sacrificing privacy.

The Equihash consensus mechanism used to mine ZEN coins supports ASIC mining.

The Horizen ecosystem consists of unique products and services, including:

• Zendu — sidechain protocol with built-in SDK, allowing developers to create and launch independent sidechains;
• Zennoda – multi-level nodal system of mass scale;
• Sphere – digital crypto wallet application;
• Horizen Development Environment (HDE) – decentralized platform for developers;
• Academy – educational platform dedicated to the world of cryptography;
• Horizen Community Council (HCC) is the Horizon organization responsible for managing the ecosystem.

In addition to HCC, Horizen implements Zen Improvement Proposals (ZenIP) for project management. ZenIP provides all the information you need on how to structure, write and submit a proposal. Once the proposal is submitted, it will be publicly available on GitHub.

Who developed Horizen?

Horizen cryptocurrency project was founded Rob Viglione And Rolf Versluis in 2017.

Rob Viglione holds a Ph.D. Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of South Carolina. Before co-founding Horizen Labs and the Zen Blockchain Foundation, he worked as an operations research analyst at Lanmark Technology. He has been CEO of Horizen since January 2019.

Before Horizen, Rolf Versluis worked at Cisco Systems. He owns information technology businesses as well as a mid-sized mining company. Rolf Versluis currently works as an executive advisor at the Zen Blockchain Foundation.

The duo got some help from Jane Lippencottco-author of the project White paper. She has been an advisor to Slingshot Finance, Teller Finance, and Unbounded Capital®, and a mentor at Gitcoin, Celo, Open Web Collective, Katapult Accelerator, BSIC, dLab, Ethereum Classic Labs, and Techstars.

The core team of the Zen Blockchain Foundation consists of 5 people:

• Vice President of Marketing – Lucy Wang,
• Development Director – Jonathan Teplitsky,
