Neo SPCC shows real-world dBFT performance potential in new distributed benchmark test

Neo SPCC has shared new benchmarking results of the dBFT protocol implemented in NeoGo. The report demonstrates significant progress in network performance in the most realistic distributed test environment used by the team to date.

The benchmarking setup was designed to evaluate the minimum achievable time per block, the minimum optimal time per block, and the robustness of the network under stress. Tests investigated the effects of time constraints on dBFT performance and stability. In a distributed environment, emulating a public network with seven consensus nodes spread across multiple data centers, NeoGo sustained 17,516 transactions per second with a block time of 300 milliseconds.

The team conducted local tests to establish a baseline. These tests used four consensus nodes and one RPC node on a single machine, operated using Docker containers on an M1 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. This configuration, free of network communication latency, provided insights into NeoGo’s raw transaction processing and resource management capabilities as the MillisecondsPerBlock setting was changed.

The most realistic distributed test environment featured eight separate machines, each with a Ryzen 5 3600 processor, 64GB of RAM, and a 500GB SSD. Seven acted as consensus nodes, separated geographically to better simulate MainNet, while one acted as an RPC node.

Both configurations used the same testing methods to determine the upper limits of performance, using worker mode and neo-bench speed mode. The former is used to establish performance baselines based on block time changes, while the latter provides information on how block time changes affect load handling capabilities.

The study found that the network handled transactions efficiently even when the MSPerBlock setting was reduced, demonstrating robustness under load. Additionally, tests showed gradual and predictable performance degradation due to block acceptance delays and display changes as network load increased. The results show that NeoGo networks can operate without a significant number of display changes with a blocking time of 300 milliseconds. Additionally, with an extremely low minimum target block interval of 60 ms, dBFT continued to perform well, with an average block acceptance interval of 139 ms and a maximum average of transactions per second of 15,974.

These results highlight NeoGo’s impressive performance and stability, revealing critical information about its capabilities and limitations under extremely time-limited conditions. Neo SPCC’s benchmarking efforts provide valuable data that will help further optimize NeoGo and Neo cores for real-world applications.
