Cryptocurrency continues to bring a touch of madness wherever it goes, and yesterday was no exception. Many already know that yesterday, the official account of the world-famous fast food restaurant chain McDonald’s was hacked. The hack was carried out in order to advertise a fake meme cryptocurrency on the Solana blockchain, tied to the character Grimace from McDonald’s lore.
The incident caused a strong reaction in the crypto community. The creator of the first popular Dogecoin (DOGE) meme, Billy Markus, known online under the nickname Shibetoshi Nakamoto, did not stand aside. Thus, he, having responded to what happened rather prosaically, stated that all this was rather stupid.
According to the creator of DOGE, everyone who bought the token either knows the rules of the game and is trying to buy and leave quickly, closing themselves off from newcomers while scammers “pull the rug out,” or is simply “very, very, very stupid.”
What’s happened?
The attackers published a post in which they mentioned the name and address of the token contract. In addition, the account of X, the marketing director of the fast food empire, was hacked for the same purpose. As a result, the market capitalization of the fraudulent token increased to $30 million, and the attackers’ winnings amounted to about $700 thousand.
McDonald’s has yet to comment on the situation, and all posts have been deleted. This is far from the last case of such fraud involving official sources of large accounts, and McDonald’s has more than five million of them on Instagram.
It is important to remain vigilant and think three times before deciding to buy something like this, even if it is an official token.
